CBMI Vision for future BMI training and degree programs Planning for BMI training and education includes preparation for our own certificate, masters, and, ultimately, the PhD in a BMI Department. As noted, the ICTS has secured from UC Irvine administration two new tenure-track faculty positions intended to take leadership roles in developing programs in BMI training . The first of them, Dr. Yunan Chen received her doctoral degree in Biomedical Informatics from Drexel University and began August 2008. Dr. Chen has begun organizing four new courses in BMI to be rolled out over the current academic year. An active search is underway for the second position. Several faculty in the Bren School of ICS Department of Informatics have become members of the CMBI and are actively participating in the growth of BMI training. The work of Dr. Padhraic Smyth, the CBMI Director, exemplifies the collaborative, multidisciplinary scholarship characteristic of and required for BMI. Dr. Gillian Hayes has spent substantial time and energy on CBMI activities (including the survey on readiness of UC Irvine Medical Center personnel for deployment of the EMR). Recruitment of Drs. Gary and Judy Olson as Donald Bren Distinguished Chairs has infused expertise in HCI with a focus on multidisciplinary “collaboratories,” an approach to remote scientific collaboration. They are working actively with Drs. Hayes and Chen to develop a new portfolio of BMI courses at UC Irvine. The collaborative approach to building training infrastructure and personnel reflects adherence to one of the recommendations by consultant Dr. Ted Shortliffe, who noted a lack of collaboration at many academic centers between hospital-based IT/BMI and the academic research enterprise. Shortliffe also noted the spirit of collaboration and collegiality that he witnessed among faculty, including the Dean of the Bren School of ICS and the Dean of the School of Medicine Relevant courses are already being offered by two departments in the Bren School of ICS: |
