Department of Epidemiology

The mission of the Department of Epidemiology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine is to study the etiology (genetic and environmental) and control of chronic disease, particularly cancer, through its surveillance, education, research and service activities. Faculty research interests include genetics and molecular epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, statistical genetics, environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, infectious diseases, and occupational epidemiology. The UCI Center for Cancer Genetics Research and Prevention operates within the Department of Epidemiology.

The Department of Epidemiology aims to monitor incidence of disease in the population to provide information in making decisions concerning public health and also develop the informatics needed to collect, store, analyze, and integrate the resulting molecular, epidemiologic and clinical data.

The Department of Epidemiology is one of the most successful and respected academic units at UCI. The evolution of our academic unit over the past 25 years has included the development of California’s first cancer epidemiology program based on a population-based cancer registry. This cancer registry has facilitated a steady growth of large cancer epidemiology research projects making UCI a leader in this particular field. As a result, the Department of Epidemiology has been successful in recruiting superb faculty who are leaders in their respective research areas as well as an exceptional group of graduate students who are partners with us in our research and teaching. The Department of Epidemiology faculty, doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars will continue to collaborate with national and international research groups and scientists owing to our strong national reputation for research innovation and excellence.
