| Mentoring: An exemplary mentor who initiated the Master of Science Training Program at the UCLA School of Public Health, Dr. Greenfield's trainees are today's leaders in the field of Clinical and Translational Science. For example, Dr. Ira Wilson is Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University; Chairman of the Tufts Clinical and Translational Research Center scientific advisory committee; and recipient of the NCRR Midcareer Mentoring Award (K24). Dr. Greenfield's trainee Dr. Richard Kravitz is Professor and Co-vice Chair of Internal Medicine at UC-Davis; a leader of the UC-Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center; Director of the K12 program; and recipient of the UC-Davis Dean's Mentoring Award. Dr. Greenfield has mentored more than 50 trainees so far in his career. |

| Research: A pioneering clinical and translational scientist, Dr. Greenfield's work has evolved into clinical practice guidelines that today are regarded as common to medical practice. His research uses algorithm models to demonstrate how increasing patients' participation in medical decisions can improve doctor-patient communication, patient satisfaction, and healthcare outcomes. With a focus on addressing disparities, his current research focuses on the adoption of best practices for improving health outcomes for diabetes patients. This vital study includes a randomized trial of “community coaches” (volunteer Latinos and Vietnamese-Americans drawn from the patients' community who themselves have diabetes), who will train patients to participate more in their interactions with their treating physicians, thereby enabling them to take more control over their disease management. |
