ICTS Home Welcome to the ICTS News & Events For the Investigator For the Community Training & Education

Arthur Lander, MD, PhD
Professor, Developmental and Cell Biology, UC Irvine Director, Center for Complex Biological Systems, UC Irvine

Current PI funding: NIH/NIGMS (P50-GM076516), National Center for Systems Biology (2007-2012) NIH/NICHD (1P01-HD052860), Animal models of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (2006-2011)

Mentoring: Dr. Lander is the Program Director of an HHMI training grant in Mathematical, Computational and Systems Biology. His 28 trainees include Dr. Lisa Plantefaber, Interim Dean of Institutional Research and Assessment at Westfield State College; Dr. Scott Saunders, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Washington University School of Medicine; and Dr. Kan Ding, Professor of Glycochemistry at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, P. R. of China. In 2001 Dr. Lander received UC Irvine's Excellence in Teaching Award from the Division of Undergraduate Education.

Research: Dr. Lander investigates how cells communicate with each other to coordinate the complex behaviors that underlie development, regeneration and cancer. His translational research includes studying the developmental biology of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), a human birth defects syndrome that affects up to 1 in 10,000 live births and is characterized by limb abnormalities, small body size, gastrointestinal malformations, characteristic facial features, and mental retardation. Dr. Lander recently helped identify the NIPBL gene as the site of mutations that cause CdLS. Using targeted ES cells, in which the NIPBL locus is disrupted by a gene trap insertion, Dr. Lander and his team have produced the first mouse model of CdLS, which is providing new ways to work on the developmental etiology, diagnosis, and potential treatment of this disorder. Dr. Lander received the NIH Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award in 1998 and was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2000. Dr. Lander is also the brother of famed genetic researcher Dr. Eric Lander, the head of the Human Genome Project.
