ICTS Home Welcome to the ICTS News & Events For the Investigator For the Community Training & Education

Paolo Sassone-Corsi, PhD
Distinguished Professor and Chair, Pharmacology, UC Irvine

Current PI funding: NIH/NIGMS (R01-GM081634), Chromatin remodeling and circadian clock control (2007-2011) AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship (0725191Y), Inflammatory response: Circadian control (2007-2009)

Mentoring: Dr. Sassone-Corsi is a highly effective mentor who has trained over 100 post-doctoral fellows and PhD candidates, many of whom have proceeded to successful academic positions around the world, including Germany, France, England, Canada, Japan and Finland. His trainees include Dr. Teruya Tamaru, currently at Toho University in Japan, who won the The Young Investigator Award from the Japanese Society for Neurochemistry (2003); and Dr. Enzo Lalli, Director of Research at the Institut de Pharmacologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire in Nice, France. In 2006 Dr. Sassone-Corsi received the Distinguished Professor Medal of the University of California. He is currently mentoring 8 trainees.

Research: Dr. Sassone-Corsi's major interest is the mechanisms of signal transduction that modulate nuclear functions, in particular, gene expression, chromatin remodeling and epigenetic control. These events have important consequences for the understanding of cellular proliferation, oncogenesis and differentiation. Prominent studies in Dr. Sassone-Corsi's laboratory have revealed an intimate link between circadian control, chromatin remodeling and cellular metabolism. The strength of these studies is particularly evident within physiological settings that have been investigated by Dr. Sassoni-Corsi's laboratory—the molecular control of circadian rhythms and the differentiation of male germ cells. In addition to many other medals and awards, Dr. Sassone-Corsi was an ISI Highly Cited Researcher in 2007.
