| Research: Dr. Silver investigates acute and long-term psychological and physical reactions to stressful life experiences, including personal traumas such as physical disability, loss, and childhood sexual victimization, as well as community disasters such as war, firestorms, the Columbine High School shootings, and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Her research, which has been consistently funded by NIMH and NSF, seeks to identify factors that facilitate successful adjustment to stressful life events and to identify myths concerning the coping process. Dr. Silver's interdisciplinary research also explores the long-term effects of traumatic experiences and how beliefs and expectations from one's social network impact the adjustment process. Dr. Silver earned the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research in 1999. |
