| Mentoring: Dr. Smyth's mentoring abilities have been recognized by the prestigious NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award (1997), which is the foundation's most highly-esteemed award for junior faculty members. The NSF CAREER program recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. Dr. Smyth has mentored 7 PhD students and is training 8 PhD students and postdocs currently. His trainees include Dr. Alex Ihler, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at UC Irvine; and Dr. Sergey Kirshner, Assistant Professor of Statistics at Purdue University. |

| Research: An accomplished researcher and valuable addition to the ICTS Council of Mentors, Dr. Smyth studies data sets with millions of records and thousands of fields, which are increasingly common in medicine, engineering, business and the sciences. Extracting useful information from such data sets is an important practical problem that requires a combined understanding of applied statistics, pattern recognition, machine learning, information theory, and artificial intelligence. Probabilistic and statistical methods are central to Dr. Smyth's research, and he has been recognized for his outstanding achievements in design, implementation, and deployment of an advanced analysis system for data mining of large image collections (NASA Group Achievement Award, 1996). Other research awards include the Lew Allen Award for Excellence in Research (JPL, 1995-1999) and the IBM Faculty Partnership Award (2001). |
