| Mentoring: Dr. Thompson's teaching and mentoring excellence has been recognized by numerous awards, including the Kaiser-Permanente Excellence in Teaching Award (1996); the UC Irvine College of Medicine Silver Beaker Award (Outstanding Basic Science Faculty, 2000); and the UC Irvine College of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award for four consecutive years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), as determined by the medical students themselves. Mentoring has included 4 graduate students and 5 scientists at the postdoctoral fellow or senior scientist level, for example Dr. Joan Steffen, Assistant Professor in Residence at UC Irvine. |

| Research: Bringing together basic research and therapeutic discovery is central to Dr. Thompson's research. Co-founder of a monthly Huntington's Disease (HD) clinic at UC Irvine, Dr. Thompson has participated in the Venezuela HD Project, working directly with HD patients. Her laboratory devotes considerable energy to developing therapeutic targets and testing potential treatments for HD. She and her colleagues were among the first to develop flies as a platform for drug screening, and they initiated using HDAC inhibitors as a potential treatment for HD. Dr. Thompson's translational work has been recognized by numerous academic and service awards, including the Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for Research (UC Irvine, 2002); the Huntington Disease Society of America's Distinguished Leadership Award (2002); and the UC Irvine College of Medicine AMWA Gender Equity Award (1999). |
