| Mentoring: Dr. Tromberg has successfully trained some of the nation's leading emerging researchers and mentors in the field of optics, such as Dr. Anthony Durkin, Assistant Professor at the Beckman Laser Institute, who has 8 optical imaging patents, with 11 pending; and Dr. Andrew Berger, Associate Professor at Rochester University, who received the Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Teaching in 2007. Dr. Tromberg has mentored 39 trainees and is mentoring 8 currently. |

| Research: An accomplished translational research scientist, Dr. Tromberg develops novel optical techniques to non-invasively monitor and image physiological processes in tissues and cells. He and his group have developed a method?known as photon migration?to quantitatively measure scattering, absorption and biochemical composition in thick tissues at depths of several centimeters. Dr. Tromberg has been particularly involved in applying this technology to cancer diagnosis and therapy, for example non-invasive functional imaging of breast cancer, assessment of response to chemotherapies, and brain functional imaging. He has published over 200 papers, has 8 patents in the field of Biomedical Optics, and is the recipient of numerous research awards including the Coherent Young Investigator Award in Biophotonics (2001) and the Athalie Clark Medical Research Award (2005). |
