Tallie Z. Baram, MD, PhD
Professor, Pediatrics, Anatomy/Neurobiology, and Neurology, UC Irvine Chair, Scientific Committee, Pediatric Partnership for Epilepsy Research

Current PI funding: NIH (R37-NS035439), Febrile seizure model: Neuronal injury and mechanisms (1997-2013) NIH (R01-NS028912), CRH mRNA regulation: Role in hippocampus (1992-2009) NIH (R01-MH073136), Early life experience and plasticity: Role of CRH (1999-2009) NIH (T32), Institutional training grant for research in epilepsy (2003-2009)

Mentoring: Dr. Baram has trained 19 pre-docs and post-docs (including 6 currently), working with them on topics related to febrile seizures, infantile spasms, and the long-term effects of early-life stress on cognitive function. Many of Dr. Baram's trainees have progressed to successful international professorships, including Dr. Roland Bender, Associate Professor of Anatomy at the University of Hamburg, Germany; and Dr. Sarit Avishai-Eliner, Associate Professor of Medicine at Jerusalem University, Israel. Dr. Baram's teaching and mentoring skills are also reflected in her co-authored book Febrile Seizures (2002).

Research: The approach in Dr. Baram''s laboratory is bi-directional translation: clinically important questions are examined using animal models, and the results of basic mechanistic studies are translated back to the bedside. Dr. Baram's work on seizures and epilepsies of infants and children has led to important discoveries about the mechanisms of infantile spasms and the long-lasting functional effects of experimental prolonged febrile seizures on the developing brain. Her work predicts novel therapy for infantile spasms (CRH antagonists) and is identifying molecular and imaging markers for individuals with febrile seizures who are at risk for developing epilepsy. Dr. Baram has earned numerous Excellence in Research Awards, including the prestigious NIH Javits (MERIT) Award in 2006 for her outstanding work on epilepsy.
