Doug Wallace, PhD
Donald Bren Professor, Biological Chemistry, UC Irvine Director, Center for Molecular and Mitochondrial Medicine and Genetics, UC Irvine

Current PI funding: California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), Mitochondria (2007-present) Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Mitochondrial role in diabetes (2006-present) NIH/DK (R01-DK73691) Mitochondrial diabetes & manganic porphyrin treatment (2006-2011) NIH/NINDS (R01-NS21328), Mitochondrial inborn errors of metabolism (2007-2012) NIH/AG (AG-2437301), Adaptive Physiology of mtDNA longevity mutations (2004-2009)

Mentoring: The Albert Einstein Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2006), Dr. Wallace is mentoring 12 trainees currently and has 75 previous trainees, including Dr. Brett Graham, Assistant Professor of Genetics at Baylor College in Houston, and Dr. Antonio Torroni, Professor of Genetics at the Universita di Pavia, Italy. Dr. Wallace is a two-time recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award at UC Irvine, from the School of Medicine in 2005 and from the Irvine Alumni Association in 2006.

Research: A pioneering translational scientist, Dr. Wallace is a co-founder of the field of human mitochondrial genetics. Mitochondrial medicine offers innovative new perspectives and approaches for addressing the common age-related diseases associated with the metabolic syndrome, as well as with forms of blindness, deafness, movement disorders and dementias—clinical problems that remain elusive to traditional biomedical concepts and approaches. Dr. Wallace's many distinctions and honorary degrees include the Metropolitan Life Foundation Award for Medical Research in Alzheimer's Disease (2000) and the UC Irvine Faculty Achievement Award (2006).
