Sue Bryant, MD, PhD
Professor, Developmental and Cell Biology, UC Irvine Vice Chancellor for Research, UC Irvine

Current PI funding: NSF ADVANCE: Institutional Transformation Award: Advancement of women faculty (2003-2008)

Mentoring: The current Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Irvine and a Fellow of the Association for Women in Science, Dr. Bryant will be an inspirational member of the ICTS Council of Mentors. Dr. Bryant has mentored 26 trainees, including Dr. Stéphane Roy, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the Université de Montréal, Canada; and Dr. Ken. Muneoka, Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology and The John L. & Mary Wright Ebaugh Chair in Science and Engineering at Tulane University, New Orleans.

Research: Dr. Bryant has made numerous seminal contributions to the field of limb development and regeneration. Her research seeks new approaches and therapies for replacing or repairing lost, damaged or diseased parts of the body. Urodele amphibians such as salamanders are alone among vertebrates to be able to regenerate lost body parts as adults. Dr. Bryant leads one of a handful of teams worldwide to use axolotls (a type of salamander) to discover the signals that trigger the regeneration response. Dr. Bryant believes that these signals have enormous potential and consequences for human health. Currently her group is using assays derived from the extensive experimental history of regenerating limbs to test the roles of several signaling molecules known to be essential for limb development. Her group is also taking a genomics approach to the isolation of genes needed for regeneration, in particular any novel factors that might be involved in transforming the differentiated limb stump into a blastema. Dr. Bryant was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2000.
