Mike Cahalan, PhD
Professor and Chair, Physiology and Biophysics, UC Irvine Former President, Society of General Physiologists

Current PI funding: NIH (NS-14609), Molecular mechanisms of ion channels in T lymphocytes (1978-present) NIH (GM-41514), Functional imaging of lymphocyte motility (1984-present)

Mentoring: Dr. Cahalan has an outstanding record in successfully mentoring the next generation of translational scientists. Recent work with his graduate student and post-doctoral fellow Dr. Shenyuan Zhang was selected by Science magazine as "cell signaling breakthroughs" in 2005 and 2006, consecutively. Dr. Cahalan's former post-doc Dr. Richard Lewis is currently Professor and Chair of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University. Dr. Cahalan is currently mentoring 4 graduate students and 3 post-docs, and he has 35 prior trainees.

Research: Dr. Cahalan's research seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms and physiological role of ion channels in the immune system. His translational collaborative work includes the discovery of novel targets and potentially useful therapeutic agents for immunosuppression. Recently, he and his team used two-photon microscopy to examine the behavior of living T and B lymphocytes in intact lymph nodes. They discovered that T and B cells are highly motile in their native habitat, which plays an important role in the cells' ability to locate and respond to antigen. These approaches are revealing important insights into the choreography of an immune response in vivo. Dr. Cahalan is the recipient of numerous research awards, including the NIH Javits Investigator Award in 2005.
