Pilot Project Awards Program

The UCI ICTS is pleased to announce a new call for the Pilot Project Awards Program. Four to six one-year awards in the amount of $25,000 - $42,000 will be conferred in this round, with a funding period of April 1, 2014 - March 31, 2015.

Eligible Projects

Clinical Translational Science Projects, currently not funded and aimed at obtaining preliminary results for a full application for extramural funds, are considered eligible.

A clinical translational science project is defined as any project aimed at accelerating the transition from discoveries arising from laboratory, clinical, or population studies into clinical applications. It is expected that about half of the funded projects will be focused on novel technology development.

Principal Investigators (PIs) must be full time UCI faculty from any school or discipline; junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply, but established investigators pursuing novel research lines are also welcome.

The review process will be structured in two phases:

Phase I: submission of scientific abstract. These abstracts will be reviewed internally.(Deadline: September 30, 2013; notification of results October 21)

Phase II: submission of full proposal; this will be limited to the top 20-25 abstracts submitted during Phase           I. These proposals will be reviewed externally.(Deadline: November 15, 2013; notification; January 10, 2014. Funding date: April 1, 2014)

* Please note that before funds are actually released to awarded applications, all required approved IRB and/or IACUC documents must be in place; an administrative approval by the NIH (that will be requested directly by the ICTS office) is also required.

Review criteria will include:

  • Overall project scientific merit
  • Translational nature of the project
